The Circus will be coming to our lovely Gallery on Saturday! We are gearing up to show off the colourful, Circus-themed entries in our pre-school art competition, run as part of this weekend's Lindfield Arts Festival.
Budding Picassos, Pollocks and Kandinskys from local nursery schools will be exhibiting their works of art alongside our "grown up" artists.
And there will be prizes...for all entrants as well as overall winners!
Come along and join the fun, this Saturday morning at 10.30...and take the opportunity to view our fabulous Sculpture Exhibition at the same time!

The Green Tree Annual Sculpture Exhibition is up and running. Our airy, sun-filled gallery is home to a wonderful variety of exhibits. We are showing nine sculptors of both local and national reputation, who have created a mesmerising range of works fit to take your breath away! All styles and materials are here: from bronze resin sea-horses and dancing hares to free-form, large-scale abstracts and more traditional figurines. Come and enjoy!

We had a great time yesterday, sunshine pouring in through the Gallery doors as we set up our first exhibition of the year 'Love is Enough'. We decided for the first one to keep it simple and show the work of our in-house artists and makers: Jill, Julie, Misha, Sam and Victoria.

With Borde Hill Garden just re-opened and foliage all springing into life and bursting with colour, we rolled up our sleeves for a good spring clean, and fortunately had two new Gallery Gal recruits to help, Sam and Vicki! Unpacking box upon box set off shrieks of delight as we unwrapped all the new exhibits and gorgeous goodies.

The Gallery is now truly brimming with gifts and art galore - sculpture, jewellery, vintage textile treasures, ceramics and paintings. Lots of ideas here for Mothers' Day and Easter gifts, or why not come and treat yourself?

Victoria Lovell's Soap Cauldroning Class Extraordinaire!

Victoria Lovell ran a spectacular soap making class last month, where her troupe of alchemists transformed leaves, herbs, and glitter into these magical bars! We are just starting to rustle up craft courses at the Green Tree, generally with space for about six people - keep your eyes peeled in the New Year!

The Green Tree Gallery takes a glittering dive into the tantalising turquoise unknown!!

From Saturday 18th September to Saturday 23rd October, come and be swept into a sparkling seascape of sunkissed ceramics, paintings woven from ocean spray and storm dust, collages of treasure, crisp photographs, gleaming glass and an intriguing trove of textiles.

Marvel at Misha Seelhof's gestural gems, paintings whose colours must have been collected from marbled lakes in secret caves! Ruth Fisher's jewel-like stained glass landscapes sigh with sun filtered tranquility. Sue England's scratchy seagulls swarm through delicately folded layers of gold sand and silvery blue wisps of sky. Gillian Bates' urban seaside stitchery is a sweet shop of pastel hues. Bonnie Mackintosh's indigo vases provide a delicate seabed for waltzing troupes of pewter shells. Pauline Crook's brightly printed deckchairs beckon weary bottoms to come and nest in their heavenly sweeps. Janine Reavell's photographs hum with peace. Clarissa Robertson's legions of glass-peaked ceramic lighthouses stretch skyward with striped bellies and the most glorious feeling of freedom...

Pippa at the Green Tree's recent 'Circus' exhibition

Ahoy gallery zealots one and all!

My name is Pippa and I am artist in residence here at the Green Tree. I am embarking on a new voyage to buff up the blog till he gleams like a glamorous emerald! The little gallery is slowly transforming into a co-operative, which aside from more meetings over glittering cupcakes and giggles, means we will be sharing the running of the show between us - swathing the curtains, gleaming the spotlights, and tweaking the strings!

The gallery gals include the two original owners, Jules, a painter of lush abstract landscapes, and Julie, a theatrical ceramic sculptor, and five more sparkling lasses ~ Victoria, a clay animal creator extraordinaire, Misha, who captures a treasure troveful of colours in her paintings and jewels, Jill and Mary, both stitch wonder~women, and me, Pippa, an illustrator inspired by faerytale magic and history.

July was a month of joy.... Julie's star~spangled acrobats, Victoria's gentle~eyed giants and a blue and white wallful brightly bedecked with my rhyme~encased characters... Julie, Victoria, and I created an exhibition twirling like a spinning~top from the theme 'Circus' in support of Rocking Horse, a fantastic Brighton-based charity helping children in hospitals. The exhibition was a roaring success, sponsored by local businesses including Cuckfield Candy Store, Pepperbox Furniture & Accessories, Reeves Pantry & Traditional Tea Rooms, and Sussex Crafts (warmest well~wishes and striped tentfuls of thank you's to you all!)

Julie's theatre background has imbued her work with all the wonder of the stage. Her Harlequin~patterned characters swanned, pranced and bounded through the month, some atop unicorns and horses, others caressing tenderly backstage...

Victoria's circus soiree of wise~eyed animals had an awe~inspiring glow of the exotic. As part of her repertoire, she created a name-the-elephant competition to raise more pennies (the elephant in question being a gigantic painted ceramic collage~puzzle of pachyderm portions!).

I exhibited ink and pencil and mixed media images from print runs of 50, all working towards a potential book in the cogs! I wrote short poems inspired by the spectacle of the subject, but juxtaposed with the danger intrinsic to many of the acts. I plan to continue selling them in the gallery.

Now we are preparing for 'Coast', a celebration of the spectacular Sussex coastline. Keep your peepers peeled for turquoise treats, luscious lighthouses, divine deckchairs and much more! Exhibition opens this Saturday.

Another of our Truly Scrumptious artists... Naive textiles from Sue & Becks Jennings. These amazing creations are actually jewellery boxes. The chocolate cake has a removeable lid, so you can store things inside or smaller bits can be threaded into the folds in the lovely chocolate swirl. My fave is the Cherry Jelly on its own cake stand, it looks so delicious you want to eat it, but its actually hand made and felted in a vintage jelly mould! What a fab idea. Only 6 days to go now until the exhibition opens and what a manic week it will be!

Truly Scrumptious Exhibition

Our next exhibition is almost upon us.... (opens on 12th June) So exciting, as I have wanted to do an exhibition along this kind of theme for ages and I can't wait until it opens. Everything is themed along delicious food, from cupcakes and sweeties to ice cream and more... Even the canapes at the Private View will be little cakes and I'm busy scouring car boots for lovely old plates to serve them on. There's 5 artists taking part so I'm going to try and give each a mention before we open, with a sneak preview of what will be in the exhibition.... Today it's Sheila Marshall who paints these amazing, iconic images of sweets and cakes...

Lovely bunnies

Having re-done our back yard to make it a bit nicer and definitely bunny proof (ie: to stop them eating all the plants!) we have reintroduced some of the bunnies that we like! These ceramic ones are made by Victoria Lovell and are perfectly safe for the garden being completely frost proof!

I love finding new work and starting on a new exhibition, but this one simply has to be one of

the best... it's all centred around food... I can hear my tummy rumbling already. It's not on for a little while yet but I am working on all the publicity and press right now. Called 'Truly Scrumptious' there's cakes, sweets and more. Yum! Look at these lovely images which have come in from the artists, they just make me drool! I can't wait for the exhibtion to open now.

Sculpture: Imagination in the Gallery...

This Thursday evening sees the launch of our new exhibition, a veritable feast of sculpture! Borde Hill Garden have been running a sculpture trail for a number of years and last year we were lucky enough to take part by exhibiting some smaller sculptures in the gallery. This year Surrey Sculpture Society return with a new exhibition and trail.

Even before we opened the gallery I loved the sculpture trail, and always made an effort to attend. There is something almost magical about wandering through such a beautiful garden and coming across the stunning pieces of sculpture placed in it for the event. The gardeners and members of SSS really work hard to make sure the sculptures fit in with their surroundings and the results are always amazing. Last year I managed to sneak a break from the gallery and took a look around the garden during the Private View. This is always held in the early evening and when the weather is good, as it was last year, it is a great time of day to wander around.

This years Private View at the gallery is on Thursday 30th, from 5-7pm and visitors to the gallery PV can also gain entry to the garden private view between 6-7pm. Let's hope for lovely weather.... If you would like to attend just drop me an email.

Laptop Disaster

If ever there was a lesson to be learnt it is that of backing up your computer regularly... Over the years I have had several 'mishaps' with computers and have so far been very incredibly fortunate not to have lost anything permanently... so today I fear this may have changed. Having been working on a design for our upcoming Truly Scrumptious exhibition all week the laptop has just died... and yes you've guessed it, all that work is not saved anywhere else... as my teen daughter would say 'OMG'... I am therefore feeling very sorry for myself, just a teensy bit stressed and am waiting for the metaphorical bar to open at 6 so I can open a bottle of red and sink into it....

The return of the starlings

Hurrah! The starling has returned to nest again in our roof. She has been seen several times this week and the tell tale signs of bird poo are all down the side of the wall. Nice....
Last year we had huge excitement when 2 fledglings appeared in the doorway of the gallery one sunny day. The little blighters then proceeded to leg it around the gallery, pooing everywhere and refusing to be caught. Let's hope they are house trained this year....

A new blog for the gallery...

So... having started our blog just a few months ago it actually seems to be getting read! We've had lots of lovely comments from people about it, so I thought we'd better set it up properly and so here we are...
The only downside is you can't see previous posts from the old blog, but if you are really interested you can go to www.greentreegallery.co.uk/blog.htm to read it.

Posting via this site means that you can add comments or things of interest if you want to (try to be nice though...!).
